Why do Catholics pray to Mary/saints?

Prayer is not worship. When one files a lawsuit/legal complaint, the last paragraph or so "prays" to the court for relief in some form. It seems to me that Catholics merely believe Mary and the saints have more "pull" will Jesus and will intercede for them.
