Gambling

Since I left the dubs I have dabbled a bit with the lottery...a scratch off ticket here or there...but nothing major. Recently I have gotten to know a few people that seem to gamble quite a bit. We went to the horse races a few weeks ago and I bet on one of the horses that a friend owns...lol fortunately not much as I lost. A couple of the guys won quite a bit though.....and they tend to go to the races every few weeks and have a bookie that they bet on football games with. And I got invited on a weekend trip to Lousiana to gamble there, I didn't go because financially it wasn't a good time for me.

I am just wondering...is this common? Am I just still out of the loop when it comes to this type of thing? Anyone here have much experience with this type of stuff?

As far as gambling goes, I can take it or leave it. I bought a few lottery tickets in July and still didn't check the numbers. I might be rich and not even know it!

I played a little blackjack while on vacation this year too, but I wasn't particularly excited by it, even when I won. It was kind of boring just sitting at the table drinking and playing cards, and I probably won't bother with it again.

It's been said that the lottery is a tax on people who can't do math :)

Let's see, I have my Powerball ticket somewhere...

A lot of people gamble on a regular basis. Many people I have worked with had 'lottery pools' where a group of people buy loto tickets every payday.

From '95-2000, I was a pawnbroker and can tell you that a LOT of people gamble regularly. I know people that have literally 'lost everything' due to this fierce addiction. The thing about gamblers is that they can hide it for a long time (no hangover, no red eyes, no bad breath), usually until they are into it deep! And the money goes FAST!!! Literally thousands of $$$ in minutes.

Most sad cases (for me) are the seniors. Many of them go to the Casino because they are lonely.

I also find it sad to see so many teenagers addicted to video lottery machines. It has become a big business in Canada. It used to be that VLTs were everywhere - corner stores, you name it. The province changed the legislation a couple years ago. They are only allowed in licensed drinking establishments now, although illegal operations are all over the place, and they do not ask for ID.

I have always enjoyed playing cards, and have played nickel-and-dime poker at friends' houses many times over the years. It was always more of a partying, card-playing type of thing.

As for loto tickets, machines, or race-betting, I see them as a waste of money. Who wins in the long run? The government, casinos, track owners, organized crime, etc. But that's just my own taste and opinion. I like to take a drink, and many people see that as a waste of money.

Those who have a gambling problem, obviously should stay clear of the temptation. I rarely play the lotto, and when I go to Vegas, I love blackjack and craps. The slots don't do anything for me.

For me, it is entertainment. I love the game, and if I am going to spend a couple hundred bucks on an evening, which is easy to do in Vegas, sometimes I prefer a show, sometimes I prefer the tables.

I used to play 7 card stud every week with a group of friends. Until one of us had 4 Jacks against a running flush. The flush won against the 4 jacks who had just bet his 4 weeks in Europe travelling, so sure was he that his hand was unbeatable.

    We don't play anymore!

That's a great way to look at it - as entertainment. You can easily rack up a couple of hundred dollars a day on vacation. Given that you're parting with your money anyway, do what you like. If it's seeing a show, great. If it's taking risks at a table or a slot machine, fine. As long as you go into it realizing you are probably going to lose your money. You may come out ahead or even score big, but don't expact that. Set an amount you are willing to lose and go no further. When you go see a show or go to a football game, you don't go because of some doorprize they may be giving away. Same with gambling, gamble for the fun, not for a big payoff. Bottom line, look at any casino, horse track, even the lotto. The money is rolling into them, not being paid out to the players.

I worked with a gambling addict. He lived in a room above a bar and shared a bathroom with others who rented the other rooms. Because of his gambling, that's all he could afford. Sometimes he'd be up $100,000, then he'd be in the hole $50,000. It seems he never got ahead - or never quit when he was there. It was very sad to watch.

Addictions are terrible things. Just because you play a few scratch off games and it doesn't affect you doesn't mean the potential isn't there for you to become addicted too. Different types of gambling offer different thrills. The interest you seem to have in this may be a sign of that. Be careful with it. It's probably easier to stop an addiction before you get hooked than afterwards.

As for the people that are winning. Sure, that can happen. I've heard of people that make their living gambling. But probably more often than not, you are hearing of the winnings, but not of the losings. People brag when they win $1000 on a horse race, but they're often embarassed to tell you they lost $2000 last time they went.

I play for fun, but the analytical side of me likes to play with a strategy and rules to try to win. Sometimes it works, but other times I screw it up and I lose. I've heard blackjack has the best odds. But in reality, even with that, even if you use all the rules of when to hit and when not to, the odds still favor the dealer slightly. With some simple card-counting (knowing whether more low cards have been played than high ones and doubling your bet when this is so), you can tip the odds ever so slightly in your favor. Like maybe 3-5% over time.

Xena, I've bought lottery tickets for years....and occasionally I go to the "boats" in Lake Charles, La......but when I go to the casinos, I only take as much money as I could safely afford to flush down the toilet.....and I play the slots to make it last longer.....I go for entertainment, but just in case I get a wild hair up my butt to get "out of control" with it, I leave my credit cards, checkbook and such at home....It's fun...and I've won several times....
