Ok so a lot of folks here are into music, and all kinds.

I am always up for hearing new and different artists. Let's face it mainstream radio is not a viable way to find out about new musicians, much less hear anyone with talent.

So I am looking to see what you all are listening to. Anyone under the radar? Is there a local group or talent that you think deserves some props? And if so, how did you first hear about them? And if ya could give us a little run-down of what kind of music it is or who they are similar to.

    I'll go first!

    Artist: Patrick Park

How I Heard Him: I went to the Liz Phair concert. She has been touring with Jason Mraz, who's not bad, but not great. I dunno why, but instead Patrick Park opened for her, and I was not disapointed at all!

His Sound: He performed his whole set all by himself. Just an accoustic guitar and his voice. Wow! He has a very mellow honey-coated voice that I could, and have, listened to for hours. His style sort of reminds me of Jacob Dylan and the Wallflowers, but better somehow. You might characterize it as folk or alt-country-folk, but he has a definate alternative edge and rasp to his voice and presentation. His album surprised me because his performance was so simple and straight forward but he utilizes a ton of instruments and the songs are pretty layerd with sound--but not in an un-appealing way. His lyrics are so-so, but I there are a few memorable one-liners from each song.

His Album is called Lonliness Knows My Name, there is a review of it here (with a much better description)

and you can check out some clips at amazon:

Anyway--he's my recommendation of an artist to watch, or at least check-out.

So who do you all think we need to check out?

Jennifer Rush....Australia....She recorded her version of "The Power of Love" and BLOWS Celine Dion, et al...OFF THE CHARTS!!! (makes Celine's version sound plumb wussy)

She has a very powerful voice...and has recorded albums that RAWWWWK!!!

None of this is new, but hardly any of it gets airplay:

Streetheart & Headpins are my most favorite Canadian bands.

T.Rex had some awesome music (from UK) as well as a female duo called "Shampoo".

I've also been listening to the Michael (McAulley) Schenker Group.... and of course I always listen to Blue Oyster Cult.

Frannie--not a huge fan of the power ballad here. But, I do love a strong voice...and I do hate Celine Dion, so I will give her a listen anyway!

Cool Nos--I have heard T-Rex before...I like 'em...I will have to poke around and listen to your other suggestions too...

    Thanks guys!

Joannadandy, when you find a website with Jennifer Rush's version of the power song, make sure you find one with a recorded LIVE performance....her LIVE performances are MUCH better than just her usual recordings....

    Jo:
Their style is very like "Queen, and the lead singer's falsetto is incredibly precise.

Cool LT, I will have to check them out...I love Queen!

Hamas--is Morcheeba really that unknown? They've been around awhile, and in my music collection, which isn't saying much since I am totally clueless when it comes to "underground" music.
