Terry! I just finished reading "Heavens on Earth: The scientific search for the afterlife, Immortality, and Utopia." By Michael Shermer

Thanks, Charles. I will definitely check the local library.

Of course I read it carefully.

Are you not conscious when your genetics tell you to eat, to sleep, to love, to protect, to care for..... this is genetics in action, conscious and very deliberate in its guidance for survival.

Let me have another go at my intention if you'll allow me.

Yes, we are made of materials of a physical nature with built-in limits and we cannot over-ride them absolutely without much travail.
However--I am talking about the "Ghost in the Machine" aspect of choosing and determining what preferences gain sway.

There is something of a horizon line of human knowledge as far as AWARENESS is concerned. No matter how fast we approach it--it recedes. It is an imaginary line.
Free Will, I think, is as real as the horizon and just as imaginary.

I am speaking about volition in a way which perhaps you may reject out of hand.

That's okay. In our organic sameness, we are finally individual in our ideations and individuation.

Individuation can be defined as the achievement of self-actualization through a process of integrating the conscious and the unconscious.

I agree with what Dennett is saying in that humanity is much better off recognizing and accepting the physical reality of are existence in an effort to make are own existence or survival a better one through knowledge of the psychical world in which we are apart of.

Putting the weight of are survival existence onto the supernatural deities of which we are selves have created in the past was and has been a probable necessary step toward mankind's inherent survival instincts.
