Juan Gabriel died.
For the world, Michael Jackson's death was the death of an insanely well known person.
In Latin America, Juan Gabriel was like our Michael Jackson, he was that well known.
Generations of people all over Latin America knew his songs. You heard his songs when you broke up with someone and went to the bar, you heard his songs in Karaoke, you heard his songs every Saturday when your grandma played music loudly and she only had the one cassette and it was his...
I hadn't cried for the death of an artist before, but today I did.
There are sooo many memories, both good and bad, in mine and hundreds of millions of people, in which he was a part.
Mexico and all of Latin America is in pain right now.
May he rest in peace.
I went to see him in concert a few decades ago. More than a performer he wrote a lot of songs for other artists. Amazing talent. May he rest in peace.
I grew up hearing his music. One of my favorites singers.
He is a fine example, at least to me, that shows that the "gay gene" comes with some extra benefits. His great talent, compassion and tolerance were a great example that may have helped people in Latinamerica reduce their homophobic attitudes.
Rest in peace Juan Gabriel
"In Latin America, Juan Gabriel was like our Michael Jackson, he was that well known."
No he wasn't. I have never heard of him. If he was Latin America's Michael Jackson then the whole world would have heard of him just as the whole world heard of Michael Jackson.
Are you Latin American, Island Man?
It would be really impressive to me that you have never heard any single Juan Gabriel song in your life. He wrote more than 1800 songs, just one of his albums sold 8 million records (most sold album in Mexico's history), he's the inspiration for Marc Anthony and many other Latin American singers....
Have you been hiding under a rock for the past 30 years or something?
Actually, I was about to post that he, UNLIKE MICHAEL JACKSON, created quite a few foundations, shelters and charities exclusively for children, one of them I actually visited in Ciudad Juarez. Furthermore, for some he just funded them and never even saw the children. He was never in any child abuse related scandal.
All that nonsense about him is the typical Latin homophobia, trying to equate gay people with pedophiles.
I'm afraid I have never heard of him either.
