For those who think Mormons are more 'successful' than the Witnesses.

Does the Mormon Church really have 11.7 million members? Keep in mind that the church practice 'quick-baptisms'. The missionary's job is to baptize people in 2 weeks from the time of the first conversation. To get baptize, all you need is to attend the first meetings, give your word that you accept the teachings, and if you smoke and drink, that you will stop. Some people get pressured to get baptize and/or to please the missionary. The missionary expects the interested person to get baptize in a specific date (in 2 weeks). If the person is not willing yet to take that step they move on. After baptism, its the congregation's job, not the missionary's, to keep 'encouraging' that person. It's no surprise that after baptism most become inactive and many don't return again. Of the 11.7 million baptized Mormons, only 1/3 are active! And in Southern American countries the percentage is smaller. All of these people are "on the rolls". But who else is part of that statistic?
Those who were baptized but who never turned in a resignation letter. Again all those people who never went back to church again. And also all those who they lost contact with, but who will forever be part of the membership statistic ("on the rolls") until the age of 110 or until proof of death. (It is estimated that in some countries, like Poland, these missing people is high as 10% of the membership figure).
The Jehovah's Witnesses easily outnumber the Mormons in active members. And if you were to compare the 6 million+ JW's with the 11 million+ M‘s, the Witnesses would still outnumber them in more 150 countries! That is because 85% of the Mormons live in the western hemisphere, and almost half in the United States. Now, if you were to count the 15.6 million people who attended the Memorial in 2002 with the 11.7 million Mormons, who by the way, a considerable percent, as we see, don't attend church, the Witnesses and it's 'adherents' outnumber the Mormons in well over 200 lands!
Jehovah's Witnesses, in 2002, were up 2.8% from the previous year.
Latter-Day Saints, in 2002, were up 2.9% from the previous year. Please take note that the percentage of increase of Mormon active members may differ. In 2001, a ward of branch was created every 2 days, average. By 2002 it fell even more; barely one congregation each week! Its rate of increase has drastically fallen since 1989.

I have created this chart for all to compare

In 2001, one ward or branch were created every 2 days. And by 2002, it fell even more: barely one congregation each week.

By 2002, there were 11.721,548 Mormons, up 2.9% from the previous year of 11,394,522. The percentage increase of actives may have differ.

Some of you have mention that they would like some info about the LDS figure and to prove to the Witnesses that they are not the only religion with remarkable increase. And here it is. But as you see, the Witnesses still out stands Mormons in many areas. What do you all think?

I think that if you take them both

jw 6,304,645 and add the mormon 3,731,270 = 10,035,915 people

that means that over 10 million people are caught up in these 2 cults.

I hope the mormons have there own "ex-mormon" forum to get support too.

    "What do I think?"

I think this proves H. L. Mencken's observation: "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

    Joker:

One of the problems with your statistical analysis is that you accept as accurate the figures provided by the WTS. As a long time JW I can assure you there are NOT 6 million witnesses in the world. The rule of thumb in every congregation I've ever been used to be that 1 out of 3 were serious, the rest were walking wounded, hangers-on, people just passing through. Today, it's less than 1/3 because so many more are inactive, irregular, or just going through the motions. In any given congo, about 20% really have their heads in the game.

So, the numbers don't reflect what they claim to reflect. In addition, the numbers are inaccurate. The count reflects the number of witnesses who are "active," which is to say, "not inactive." JW's are considered active if they have reported field service time within the past six months. If they've missed any of those months, they are "irregular," but still considered active and still counted among the membership. As many threads on this board have discussed at length, much of the reported time posted by the WTS is bogus. And much of the phantom time that is reported comes from the marginal publishers who turn in one hour or two, just so they won't be labeled "inactive" and thus come to the attention of the elders. Staying under the radar is the name of the game for many, who just want to be allowed to socialize with their families.

    Anyway, nice looking chart.

I don't want to seem to be defending the Witnesses, but I must make a correction. JWs count only those who have reported time during the month. If you are irregular, you are counted on the months you report, and not counted on the months that you do not report.

However, an awful lot of the reported time is bogus. I know, because I reported a lot of bogus time. I was a regular publisher for over a year without going in service. I even continued to be a publisher for about 6 months after I stopped going to meetings.

Similar problems exist in the statistics of any religion. What constitutes a Catholic? Is it baptism, even if the person hasn't been to church in 20 years? In most cases, religious membership is determined by personal declaration. If you call yourself a Catholic, or a JW, you are one. That is how the census works, anyway.

    Running:

I was under the impression Joker was using peak publisher figures and followed his pattern, but you are correct with respect to a given month. However, JW's use "peak publishers" when they're bragging, and "average" publishers the rest of the time, and either tally would include irregulars. My point was that all the people who "say" they are witnesses (by simply reporting time) are not, therefore the chart was based on a false premise.

Joker also uses memorial attendance figures in an effort to make his point, but we all know those numbers are jacked up by dragging warm bodies to the annual event. Even the WTS doesn't suggest those 15 million are witnesses, although they play the "potential" card when it suits their purpose to post bigger numbers.

But I respect your point and liked your post.

  • RunningMan

Yes, I like the way they consider their memorial attendance to show the huge potential of interested ones.

What they don't realize, is that the memorial attendance primarily represents the fringe of the organization - those people who know that it's crap, but go to one meeting a year to keep their relatives happy, or those who know a bit of the doctrine but don't believe it enough to actually become Witnesses.

The memorial attendance actually represents their past failure, not their future potential.

    Very well put!

That's interesting. What's even more interesting is the fact that your "topic history" shows this is the fourth time you've brought this out under different thread titles and the sixth time you've had threads regarding JW statistics. You seem kind of fixated on this. Just a little peculiar.
