Yes it very dry and unexciting but it tells on the Governing Body's motives from way back and that's what I find interesting and thought needs to be kept in mind and the impact it has had on those climbing this corporate ladder to the stars. And gives me insight of how the brother are in Ireland back in the day 35 years ago.

I was a pioneer in Dalkeith congregation near Edinburgh at this time. There was a bro who was a friend of John May who went out to Ireland to try to sort out is friend when he heard he was going off the rails. Of course when he heard about the Ray Franz story from John he came back to Dalkeith to tell everybody else.

There were a few who left with him (I can't remember his name) and they used to picket the meetings and follow us around when we were knocking doors. I remember adverts in the local paper "What really happened at Brooklyn?" Sadly I heard one of them had committed suicide before I left Dalkeith in '85.

Little did I know they was right after all.

John May (Derek's brother) and Martin Merriman were elders in Jehovah's Witnesses in Ireland. When they heard of the expulsion of Raymond Franz, high-level member of their elite Governing Body, in 1979, they flew out to ask the Governing Body, "Why?" Governing Body member Lyman Swingle sarcastically snubs them

Listened to this in full for the first time this morning. Some of the things I grew up around are directly related to it. Sad. And how many of us have been down similar paths, especially before the internet?

The part about the apostate hunts, yeah, remember those even as a wee nipper. The congregation I grew up in had a similar attitude to what they describe in Ireland, where asking a question and using one's own conscience over-rode what was written in the WT. And it wasn't apostasy. It was your own conscience and everyone was entitled to find the right line for themselves, within the obvious 'thou shalts' specifically said in the bible. Very different religion to that which seems to have been happening in Brooklyn even back then.
