As a youg man this stunned me when I studied the original "Youth" book 97% had done it so I thought soo that's pretty much everyone I guess the 3% were Witness youth! Also "Awake" claimed 90% of students had accessed porn at some time. Everyone is doing it I guess 10% are the Witness youth...how dumb was I?

I'm amazed that the WTS is so against masturbation to begin with.

There is nothing - NOTHING - in The Bible that says masturbation is a sin. And this from a book that states a menstruating woman is unclean and so is everything she sits on.

The WTS avoids calling masturbation a sin, but repeatedly calls it 'an unclean habit'.

But that isn't in The Bible, either.

I see why any Christian group might be against sex outside of marriage, I get that (although don't agree), but what we have with the WTS is a cult-like group that says its members shouldn't masturbate.

Utterly ridiculous, especially for males. Sexually mature males continuously produce sperm. If a man isn't in a sexual relationship, then he gets a build-up of semen, aka 'blue balls'. Masturbation is pretty much as natural and common as blowing your nose.

    97% had done it

Statistically speaking, that means that 3% are liars.

Sex has always been the number 1 way religions controlled the masses.

    JWs say -

    • Sex is only to be between married people
    • Dating is only for finding a marriage mate
    • Men are to financially support their wife and children

Growing up as a born-in JW my parents told me I could not date until I had a job that could support myself, a wife, and children. I just happened to graduate high school at the beginning of the recession of the 1990's. So, it was a long road to travel before I could mark all the boxes.

JWs reasoning against masturbation is just like its reasoning against oral sex - Because we said so! I remember as a kid studying the Youth book with my dad. When it got to the chapter on sex there was no explanation in the book. My dad told me, "Well, it's wrong because you're stealing from Jehovah. When you seek sexual gratification outside the marriage arrangement that is stealing."

"Stealing from Jehovah"?!?! That answer is dripping with BS!

Hi truth_b_known! For what it's worth, I agree that parents must be held responsible to financially support any children they may have, whether that means that both are employed or just one is and the other stays home with the children. I believe it is wrong to have deliberately have children you cannot provided for, and it is dishonorable to not make every effort to provide for your children, regardless of the circumstances.

That said, I would bet that the number of those who have never masturbated in extremely small, probably a tiny fraction of a percent. And once you try it, it's practically impossible to never do it again. So the WT's estimation of those who have masturbated is probably quite low. And active JWs are no exception. They just don't admit it.

I also agree with the majority of the other commenters. Masturbation is not even mentioned in the Bible, even though other very personal matters such as ejaculation (in within marriage) and menstruation were mentioned and regulated repeatedly. The account of the death of Onan has nothing whatsoever to do with masturbation or even birth control. It has to do with his grossly violating the intent of the brother-in-law marriage arrangement. This is just another example of the way organized religions twist scriptural accounts and take them out of context as a premise to control every aspect of their followers' lives.

If I remember it was George Carlin who said, "If we were not supposed to masturbate, our hands would be where our shoulders are!"

"If we were not supposed to masturbate, our hands would be where our shoulders are!" - lol.

    Q. Why do monkeys masturbate?

    A. Because they have opposable thumbs.

I agree 100%! Irresponsible child birth and non-supportive parents is unacceptable. That being said, I also see the damage of not letting teenagers or young adults even date simply because they cannot afford to support a family.

This caused a huge problem with me and my marriage. I was in my mid-twenties before I even had a girlfriend. I was lost and had to learn through the school of hard knocks.

I think to many JW youth leave the religion in the belief that they can go out into secular society that has a more liberal approach. To a point this is correct. However, this freedom comes at a cost, and there are still consequences for our actions e.g procreation and the best care for that life. Sadly, many in the above example soon come back to reality and find themselves in some very sorry states. I even personally knew of one ex jw who become a prostitute.

That been said I have often wondered, what the incidences of substance abuse, premarital sex, masterbation, domestic violence would be amongst the JWs. If it is higher than secular society then they surly do a good job of hiding it.
