The old claim was that toasting had religious roots. This topic has no doubt been discussed here at some stage.
I always thought toasting originated from two people pouring a part of their drink into each other's cup as a sign of trust that nothing was poisoned.

I toast with jw family. Most accept this.
When doing this, I tell them a story about toasting.
"Why toasting? Having a diner, the eyes see the beautiful food, and enjoy. The nose smells the fine and excelent aromas, and enjoy. The mouth experience the most fantastic taste, and enjoy. So, the ears complain, they can't enjoy diner. That's why tasting was implemented, so the ears could enjoy the sound of fine crystal glass.".
Telling this short story makes even a jw smile.
