CUTTING YOUR Lover into 12 pieces for getting raped by your own permission. Really can't be explained to this day. Judges 19

25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

29 When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel. 30 Everyone who saw it was saying to one another, “Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt. Just imagine! We must do something! So speak up!

I like to read books translated and presented individually including long introductions and footnotes. I especially like Robert Alter's translation of Genesis, The Song of Solomon by Ariel Bloch and The Book of Job by Raymond Scheindlin.

Robert Alter in particular points out all the words and phrases that are repeated in similar stories and themes that recur that may be missed in other translations.

Plus reading the book of Job as a book in its own right without canonical contextual baggage makes it much more interesting.

And non-religious renderings of the Song of Songs are much clearer about the erotic language used.

I say good for you PaleE on reading the Bible with your WT goggles off. It helped me quite a bit to do this for myself.

Have you heard of the e-watchman? He attempts to answer some objections a former JW found in the Bible using his WT goggles and gets it royally wrong.

I bought the NEV and it is a lot easier to read. I was asked by visiting elder "Do you have a Bible?" (after a life time 'in', yes I have NAV, King James, and the new one. He all but brushed this off and they got me a wt Grey version, them others apparently don't matter. I have since learned that any version which draws on the works of Wescott and Hort is suspect as these two fellers were into the occult and didn't believe in very fundamental things of Christianity. Many Christians haven't even read the Bible. Bart Erhman found that with his students. Funny that the supposedly most important book to any Christian, the Bible, hasn't even been read by them. I showed a few choice scriptures to one of my Catholic friends. They were shocked. We are all maneuvered through the Bible by the religious authorities to prop up their agenda. It is a book that can be used for immeasurable good... and immeasurable harm.

Zappa ... excellent list. I am making a copy for my own reference. Thank you. And baker... those scriptures in Judges are sick. You can see how fundamentalist Middle Eastern desert dwellers continue today with these ideals.

Many an atheist has resulted from reading the Christian Holy Bible.

    @ Heaven...

Did you see the thing (on TV or the net, can't remember which), where a guy put a Quran cover over a Bible, and started showing people the somewhat less-than-appealing Bible passages (I'm sure you can guess which).

Everybody was quite condemnatory over these "Quran" quotes, but you should have seen the surprise and taken-abackness when he pulled off the cover and showed them what the book really was.

I'm very interested in how the "God's-word" crowd will handle more and more people coming out and (bravely, IMO) stating that there are passages in the Bible that are actually offensive.

It can be said with every justification that the JW organisation are repeat offending false prophets.

By their own literalist application of the Bible in Deuteronomy 13 verses1 to 5 it would be reasonable that it is God's intention to kill off such suppliers of false prophecy.

Now I'm not suggesting the deaths of the JW leaders because in an otherwise civilized western society we no longer practice barbaric and primitive Biblical retribution...but how else could the scripture be applied other than by condemning and dissolving the JW Organisation who are such brazen offenders?

As the sacred scripture instructs "You must rid yourselves of this wickedness". NEB

    Governing body, are you listening?
