By the way, God speaks to anyone who can listen to a recording of the bible or read it for themselves. And for the record, every person will definitely have a face to face encounter with God. Everyone. - Perry

I know the bible as well as anybody. It is an appalling book.

It would be fascinating to have a face to face with the god of the bible. Perhaps he will tell us why he is such a stupid bastard.

Apparently he was angry about the Canaanites sacrificing some babies, so his solution was to have Joshua's army murder all the babies.

    What a fucking retard!

Even this wouldn't prove the supernatural being was who they claimed to be. If it claimed to be the god of the bible, how would anyone know it was not Zeus playing a trick? Without omniscience no one can know for sure what any supernatural being truely is. That's if it wasn't just the result of being in a computer simulation...

I have started to get used to waking by faith and not by sight..

It has taken a long time to get used to it. I can't say that I totally like it. ....Perry

Because of the death of Jesus in our stead, man is put in the same position he was at the beginning - destiny determined by belief, not by how many rules you follow.

Ahhh, Perry - Adam and Eve sinned because they failed to follow a rule. Don't eat from that tree! That's about as much a rule as a rule can get.

Excellent. I like it when someone helps me to understand the thoughts that are going on in my head.

    Thanks xjwsrock.

If you are a believer, please read your bible entirely, slowly and consciously. I bet you will realize that not one character in the bible ever expressed blind faith without the burden of proof.

And if you are a believer in life creating itself, please read the evidence slowly. There is not one example of life coming from non-life.

You are one of the most tortured people I have ever met. I hope you find peace.

    Dear Perry,

There is no need to accept any model of autobioenesis in order to realize the Bible is a pile of crap.

I agree with Cofty's summation of Yahweh's character (I may express it a little differently), now you've met two of us.

@Perry I'm genuinely interested to know if you can provide one example of a bible character exercising faith as we are expected to today, without proofs?

I can think of examples when bible characters demanded proofs before getting on board, a fleece in the middle of a threshing floor covered with dew or something... but I can't think of any examples where a bible character took a leap of faith blindly.

I ran across an interesting quote recently from the one-time editor of Punch magazine that reminded me of this thread:

“So the final conclusion would surely be that whereas other civilizations have been brought down by attacks of barbarians from without, ours had the unique distinction of training its own destroyers at its own educational institutions, and then providing them with facilities for propagating their destructive ideology far and wide, all at the public expense.

Thus did Western Man decide to abolish himself, creating his own boredom out of his own affluence, his own vulnerability out of his own strength, his own impotence out of his own erotomania, himself blowing the trumpet that brought the walls of his own city tumbling down, and having convinced himself that he was too numerous, labored with pill and scalpel and syringe to make himself fewer.

Until at last, having educated himself into imbecility, and polluted and drugged himself into stupefaction, he keeled over--a weary, battered old brontosaurus--and became extinct.” ― Malcolm Muggeridge
