This point was highlighted shortly before the release of the Greatest Man book. Often when you asked 'anointed" ones about hwo they knew of their hope, a common answer was that when reading the New Testament it was as if it was written to them, whereas the great crowd reads it more like history and prinicpled directives.

It was explained that the great crowd could still pray to Jesus based on the merits of our association with the 144,000 and not on our own.

Years ago there was a WT article about becoming friends with God like Abraham

The covering of righteousness being thus imputed to the "great multitude," life may now also be entered upon their account. (Romans 6:13) Like the pre-Christian patriarch Abraham, to whom righteousness was imputed because of his active faith, they can be looked upon as ‘friends of God.’ (Romans 4:6-22; James 2:23; Psalm 32:2) Because they are maintaining their righteous standing before Jehovah God he will preserve them alive on earth clear through "the war of the great day of God the Almighty" at Har–Magedon, with which this old system of things will end.

Righteousness is already imputed to the "great crowd" because "they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." They are already living in the flesh with the hope of surviving the great tribulation, and their lives are considered righteous lives, like that of Abraham of old.

God does not adopt them as spiritual sons, as he does the 144,000. But he does declare the other sheep righteous, in the sense that Abraham was declared righteous as God’s friend.—Matthew 25:46; Romans 4:2, 3; James 2:23.

For the other sheep, being declared righteous as God’s friends allows them to embrace the hope of everlasting life in a paradise earth—either by surviving Armageddon as part of the great crowd or through the ‘resurrection of the righteous.’

By the end of the thousand years, all faithful ones

will have been brought to human perfection through the ministration of Jesus Christ and his 144,000 fellow priests. They will be righteous, not merely be declared righteous as friends of God. They will "come to life," being completely free of sin and death inherited from Adam.

When Abraham was getting old and Jehovah still had not given him the promised seed, he spoke with God about his concern. Jehovah reassured him. The result? Abraham "put faith in Jehovah; and he proceeded to count it to him as righteousness."
