    Mine are a toss between:

"And had I but known last summer, what I now understand

I'd have never set my foot inside this bleak and bitter land". (very appropriaten for this forum)

Al Stewart, "Coldest Winter in Memory" from the album "Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time"

    and

"Sometimes it seems impossible that the game could get that rough

But the stage is set, the exits barred and the makeup won't come off

So you make your bow to the balcony, you light another cigarette

And the lights grow dim as the music starts and it's easy to forget"

Al Stewart, "Carol", from the album "Modern Tmes"

I should pay more attention to Al Steward, I think.

For some reason these lyrics by Stuard Adamson (RIP) keep coming to mind since the bombs started falling: (song is "Close Action" by Big Country)

A score of years this line has run
Above the crests that drown the sun
A mile high the turbines turned
The stokers sweat the monkeys burned
    I will carry you home
With the gods in my eyes
    I will carry you home
    While the westerlies sigh
    The continents will fly apart
The oceans scream and never part
    Divided souls can never rest
Must join the nations break the test
    I will carry you home
With the gods in my eyes
    I will carry you home
    While the westerlies sigh
    I will carry you home
With the gods in my eyes
    I will carry you home
    While the westerlies sigh
For endless hours the sirens wail
Await the tide that brings the sail
Cling the walls and close the shore
The lovers wait who walk no more
    I will carry you home
With the gods in my eyes
    I will carry you home
    While the westerlies sigh
    I will carry you home
With the gods in my eyes
    I will carry you home
    While the westerlies sigh
    I will carry you home
    I will carry you home
    I will carry you home
    I will carry you home

    THE BELOVED - SWEET HARMONY

    Is it right or wrong
    try to find a place
    we can all belong?
    Be as one
    try to get on by
    if we unify?
    We should really try
    All this time
    spinning round and round
    made the same mistakes
    that we've always found
Surely now we could move along
    make a better world?
    No it can't be wrong

    Let's come together right now
    oh yeah in sweet harmony
    let's come together right now
    oh yeah in sweet harmony
    let's come together right now
    oh yeah in sweet harmony
    let's come together right now
    oh yeah in sweet harmony

    Oh yeah
    oh yeah
    oh yeah

    Let's come together ...

    Time is running out
    let there be no doubt
    we should sort things out
    If we care
    like we say we do
    not just empty words
    for a week or two
    Make the world your priority
try to live your life ecologically
Play a part in a greater scheme
    try to live the dream
    on a wider scene

    Let's come together ...

I have lots of favorites...here's one...

Invincible...the song can partially be heard here lyrics below

    Seven the Hard Way
    Date: 1985
    AMG ID: R000001676 (album inprint)

    Invincible
This bloody road remains a mystery
This sudden darkness fills the air
    What are we waiting for?
    Won't anybody help us?
    What are we waiting for?

We can't afford to be innocent
Stand up and face the enemy
It's a do or die situation
    We will be Invincible

This shattered dream you cannot justify
We're gonna scream until we're satisified
    What are we running for?
We've got the right to be angry
    What are we running for?
When there's no where we can run to anymore

We can't afford to be innocent
Stand up and face the enemy
It's a do or die situation
    We will be Invincible
And with the power of conviction
    There is no sacrifice
It's a do or die situation
    We will be Invincible

    Won't anybody help us?
    What are we running for?
When there's no where, no where we can run to anymore

We can't afford to be innocent
Stand up and face the enemy
It's a do or die situation
    We will be Invincible
And with the power of conviction
    There is no sacrifice
It's a do or die situation
    We will be Invincible

THE STRANGLERS - ALWAYS THE SUN

How many times have you woken up and prayed for the rain? How many times have you seen the papers apportion the blame? Who gets to say, who gets the work and gets to play? I was always told at school, everybody should get the same How many times have you been told, if you don't ask you don't get? How many liars have taken your money, your mother said you shouldn't bet? Who has the fun, is it always the man with the gun? Someone must have told him, if you work too hard you can sweat There's always the sun There's always the sun Always, always, always the sun How many times have the weathermen told you stories that made you laugh? Y'know it's not unlike the politician and the leaders when they do things by half Who gets the job, of pushing the knob That sort of responsibility you draw straws for, if you're mad enough There's always the sun There's always the sun Always, always, always the sun

    Am Mur Gorm by Capercaillie

Mur b'e thusa bhiiodh an Cuilithionn
    'na mhur eagarra gorm
    ag crioslachadh le bhalla-criche
    na tha 'nam chridhe borb

Mur b'e thusa bhiodh a' ghaineamh
    tha'n Talasgar dumhail geal
'na clar biothbuan do mo dhuilean
    air nach tilleadh an run-ghath

'S mur b'e thusa bhiodh na cuantan
    'nan luasgan is 'nan tamh
    a' togail cair mo bhuadhan
    'ga cur air suaimhneas ard

'S bhiodh am monadh donn riabhach
    agus mo chiall co-shint'
    ach chuir thusa orra riaghladh
    os cionn mo phianaidh fhin

    Agus air creachainn chein fhasmhoir
    chinn blathmhor Craobh nan Teud
    'na meangach duillich t'aodann
    mo chiall is aogas reil
