Girl, 5, from Jehovah's Witness family can have blood transfusion, judge says

A HIGH Court judge has ruled that doctors can give a sick five-year-old girl from a Jehovah’s Witness family a blood transfusion.

The little girl’s parents said their religious beliefs would not allow them to consent to a blood transfusion.

But they said they would not object to a judge making the decision.

Mr Justice Hayden was told that the little girl was in a “grave” situation and could die or suffer a stroke if she did not have a transfusion.

The judge analysed evidence at a public hearing in the Family Division of the High Court (pictured) in London on Wednesday after hospital bosses asked him to make a decision as a matter of urgency.

He said bosses at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust had responsibility for the girl’s care and had made the application.

He said the girl was being treated at Leeds Children’s Hospital.

The judge heard evidence via a telephone link to the hospital.

A specialist told Mr Justice Hayden that the little girl was suffering from sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder, and that her condition had deteriorated.

He said he feared a “life-threatening event” if the girl was not given a blood transfusion soon.

The girl’s father broke down as he told the judge that he wanted his daughter to live but could not agree to a blood transfusion.

He said he and the girl’s mother could let the judge make the decision.

Mr Justice Hayden said the law allowed judges to make such rulings.

Jehovah’s Witnesses say their attitude to blood stems from Biblical teaching.

“Both the Old and New Testaments clearly command us to abstain from blood,” says the religion’s website, www.jw.org.

“God views blood as representing life.

“So we avoid taking blood not only in obedience to God but also out of respect for him as the Giver of life.”

The website highlights a number of Biblical references, including passages in Genesis, Leviticus, Deuteronomy and Acts.

Good find Tenacious. I am glad that the judge ruled the way he did. No parent should have the right to deny /agree to something for their child who does not understand much about the implications their decision will have on them as serious as death! If they are adults then they should be given the choice to decide.

How can such parents live with themselves when a kid dies due to their beleifs which a kid who is not old enough to understand nor speak for themselves, unless parotted.

Did you notice the indirect plea of the father " He said he and the girl’s mother could let the judge make the decision.!

He knew he can get out of this mess as well as not be held responsible by the jdub-robo-cops coz the judge ruled it...

    Thanks for sharing it Tenacious.

I often wonder if there are any who have left the religion now ,did in the past while an active JW let a child die because of JW teachings..

I think it would be a terrible realization to live with.

Its good the judge ruled in favour of a transfusion for the child.

The girl’s father broke down as he told the judge that he wanted his daughter to live but could not agree to a blood transfusion.

He said he and the girl’s mother could let the judge make the decision.

I still can`t really get my head around this reasoning ,they know its the right decision to make but they don`t want to make it ,they want someone else to make that right decision for them ?

Unfortunately by beig in a cult, the parents had to abide by Watchtower rules. They must have been so happy when the judge allowed the transfusion, even though they couldnt show their joy to fellow witnesses.

I suspect most JW parents in this situation are very happy for the court to take over. Actually I suspect the GB are secretly relieved too.

Part of the package which comes with being a JW is to give up one's freewill and accept the decisions of others. Sometimes this works against the interests of the individual as could have been the case here if it were not for the common good sense of the law and medics.

By cultivating this sense of "dependency" among the flock, the GB creates their ideal followers --to have unquestioning obedient sheep. It's how cults work.

I do hope the parents will reconsider the logic of giving up common sense and will soon leave their hurtful religion.

He said he and the girl’s mother could let the judge make the decision.

And thousands of JWs parents rejoice, silently.

i can sympathise with the parents--this was the prime reason i quit the cult--back in 1971--before my first child was born.

The parents will be shunned, sooner than later.

Eventually, the family will leave the Watchtology cult as the harsh, unloving treatment will make them see Watchtology for what it is.
