Charles Schulz used the Great Pumpkin thing to allegorise orthodox Christianity vs. cultism. Santa Claus represented "true" religion while the Great Pumpkin was Linus' own private cult. You'll see many similarities between Linus' "faith" and the Dub movement if you continue to read old Peanuts comics!
