Do you think that if the US made peace with Iraq and nations in the middle east, that terrorists would stop targeting US citizens around the world?

    Couldn't peace become contagious???

    No.

The people who are involved in the terrorist acts around the world are zealots who have been hating all of their lives. How we proceed in any region, including their own, will have absolutely no effect on that.

It saddens me to see the pictures and film of children in some of these US hating regions. They are raised with this hatred of us and others and they know nothing else. They grow into adults with the belief that how they feel about us is righteous. It even becomes something they are taught is a requirement in order to fall in line with their religious beliefs.

It would take a couple of generations to turn that kind of belief system around.

xw..I agree with you...one mirroring example might be the way extremists in our own country have come to hate the government that provides for them...their children get raised with the same ingrained hatred... There will always be some kind of terrorist somewhere, those who think they have personal/private/religious wars with the west. Could we kill them with kindness and humanitarian aid or is iit too late for all that?

Iraq was a US ally for at least a decade. Hussein even asked permission from the american ambassador glaspie before he invaded kuwait.

Saudi arabia has been on the maerican side for 50 yrs.

Iran has been mostly pro american, though it diminished under the ayatolla.

Turkey has been steadfastly pro american for yrs.

If there is so much anti americanism, it's quite recent, or perhaps it's an image built by the media.

Personally, I think that peace in the middle east is pretty much a pipe dream. As others have said, the hatreds are ingrained. Even if the US were NOT a factor, do you honestly believe that those nations could set aside the differences that they have w/ each other and have had for generations? Just HOW long did the Iran/Iraq war last? Just HOW would Israel fit in, if their borders weren't guaranteed by larger nations...or at least their military technology? The US consistently has a foreign policy that engenders bitterness in many. Some are bitter simply for the fact that they are on the receiving end, rather than powerful enough to be on the giving end. Vietnam...the US and other western nations had ol' Uncle Ho ready to eat out of their hand after WW2...well, guess what? We squandered it. Iran...was a longtime ally of the US...well, they finally got tired of Britain and the US letting the Oil companies ravage the only saleable resource that they had left...as well as playing their games with Iranian internal politics. Those are but a couple of examples.

The US bringing "Peace" to the region? I hardly think so...Holding things at a standoff? Maybe.

right after 911 there were a couple of excellent reports about the situation in the middle east and why bin laden and his band hate the US.

unfortunately such reports are no longer broadcasted...instead you hear this bullshit nonsense that they hate the US and want it destroyed because of jelousy and hate for freedom. utter nonsense.

bin laden hates the US for its involvment in the arab world, for its support for israel, for having troops stationed on what he consideres holy land (saudi arabia), and for bringing american culture into the arab world.

so if the US would completely retreat from the area bin laden would consider himself victorious and he and his followers would no longer be a threat.

it was the same thing with the USSR. muslims did not attack russia after the soviets retreated from afghanistan.

Why do we keep fighting a 4,000 year old war. Hey let the Jews fight their own battles. Just because some silly old book told them they were God's chosen people?? Same goes for the Muslims to. So who is right or wrong? I elect not to take sides.

No. If we just sit back and try peace, and not raise any feathers, we as a nation are going to get our ass kicked.

We could stay out of the middle east completely, and the terrorists will still aim to kill us.
