    The Journey by Mary Oliver

    One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
    though the voices around you
    kept shouting
    their bad advice--
    though the whole house
    began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
    at your ankles.
    "Mend my life!"
    each voice cried.
    But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
    though the wind pried
    with its stiff fingers
    at the very foundations,
    though their melancholy
    was terrible.
    It was already late
    enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
    branches and stones.
    But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
    the stars began to burn
    through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
    which you slowly
    recognized as your own,
    that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
    into the world,
    determined to do
the only thing you could do--
    determined to save
the only life you could save.

Hi Introspection and welcome to the group!

Here in the UK there is a magazine called 'The Big Issue'.
It is sold by homeless folks who thereby raise a bit of money for themselves - a great idea.

Well The Big Issue has a sister site on the web; www.abctales.com

The following is taken from that site - I thought it would be appropriate to put it here.

    Jehovah's Witness

    This Christmas,
    I was scared witless,
when a nice man came to see me.

    I'm a witness he said,
    and you'll soon be dead,
if you don't listen to me.

    I began to feel ill,
    god would not kill,
a poor little soul like me.

    I live a good life,
    I don't beat the wife,
why is he picking on me?

    Don't worry he said,
    when everyone's dead,
a better world this will be.

    I'll knock at your door,
    but you'll be no more,
you'll be out banging doors, just like me.
