Communism does not work due to 2 main factors:

    1) The leaders are not treated the same as the 'workers' and abuse the power given to them- thus destroying the basic theory of communism from the start.

    2) There is no economic encentive to get educated, work harder, develop new products-etc..etc..so the economy and technology stall...........

Lets not get into the central government deciding the needs of the people-We need more Tractors!! The entire economic reality of Supply and Demand are shot to hell...........

Hey Larc! You said, "socialism barely works with large inefficiencies built into the system."

I am very curious as to where socialism has barely worked. I've never known socialism to rise to that high estate that could be characterised as "barely working." I've always observed socialism as being a dismal failure everywhere it's been tried.

Francois, Good point. I was thinking of Communism and Socialism as practiced in particular countries. Of course, communisum has fallen apart in the USSR. When I think of Socialism, I think of Canada and the UK. They do have enough captialism mixed in to make it work, but rather inefficiently. You are right, pure socialist systems fail just like communism.

Communism a dismal failure? - yes, because of the incentive factor. Marx's vision of a grand, equal brotherhood where each gives according to his ability and receives according to his need, was embarrassingly naive.

Capitalism a rounding success? Hmmm...I guess future societies will be the judge of that.

This is a massive oversimplification, but capitalism works because at its core it gets people to ask "What's in it for me?" Communism didn't work because at its core it failed to get people to ask "What's in it for everyone?" Communism is a great idea, but it just doesn't work.
