Woman : Professor Haldane, even given the billions of years that you say were available for evolution, I simply cannot believe it is possible to go from a single cell to a complicated human body with its trillions of cells organized into bones and muscle and nerves, a heart that pumps without ceasing for decades, miles and miles of blood vessels and kidney tubules, and a brain capable of thinking and feeling.

Haldane : But Madam, you did it yourself! And it only took nine months.

    Indeed.....

I used to dismiss the mechanisms of evolution as improbable and illogical....... aka...... I was ignorant to basic biology!

I personally think this type of argument for evolution does more harm than good because it has rather obvious flaws. Whatever works for ya though...

It's glib and misses the point.

Many miss this point, it is an old reference and it is to do with time alone really. It is in no way comparing evolution itself to the development of a human, but illistrates early difficulties with evolution, namely the concept of the potenial of change over time,it was just so inconceivable. Yet this quote reminded everyone that not only was it conceivable but witnessed and in far less time than billions of years. It is an excellent point he made.

Obviously he is not stating that a human developing is evidence for evolution.
