The Real Reason For No More Bookstudies.

So I was just thinking about my days at WTF and driving out for book study when it dawned on me.

Bethelites are given a stipend for travel based on NYC public transportation. Depending on how you pay let's just call it a $5.00 round trip.

If you drive your care you're also reimbursed for mileage at the standard IRS rate. Let's round that down to .50 per mile.

If four bethelites get in a car and drive an average of 30 miles to the (former) bookstudy the society is spending 4x$5.00 for the stipend plus and additional $30.00 for mileage. That's $50.00 per car load.

6000 plus bethelites worldwide. Let's say 2000 don't commute. 4000 do commute to the (former) bookstudy. That's 1000 car loads at $50.00 or $50,000.00 per week or 2.6 million dollars per year.

That should pay off a few Pedo lawsuits.

Probably not THE reason but one reason amoung many.

    standard IRS rate.

    6000 plus bethelites worldwide.

    The IRS rules apply worldwide?

That could def be part of it. I always assumed it was more of a liability issue. If an elder has book study at his house and ends up molesting some kids there the org could def get blamed for it.

I'll go away with (1) to get away from Pedo liability, (2) fear of apostacy in small groups, (3) save money.

Just another flip-flop from the flip-flopping cult.

Few homes available, either homeowners do not want to host one, or the BOE determines the families not suitable

Hard to find qualified conductors/readers for all the groups. My husband conducted 2 every week for some time.

It was right in the middle of the gas crisis when, here in CA anyway, we were paying over $5.00 a gallon for gas. The societies official line was that they wanted to ease the burdens and also that the end of the world was right around the corner so we wouldn't be needing it anyway. Though what the "real" reason was idk. Though I do remember thinking at the time when gas went back down to $3.00 that the society might have been a little hasty in their actions.

Well we had a local Pedo MS hosting a Bookstudy and having kids Pool parties. Another Cali Delta Elder had Bookstudy at his dockside home and invited the 14-15 yr old bikini clad girls for boatrides after service.........

The real reason? The same time they discontinued bookstudies, they also removed the ability to do research and create a talk based solely upon the bible reading, the #2 talk, and reserved the number 3 or 4 for MS and elders.

My conclusion is that bookstudies allowed too much thought and discussion. They took that away so it's brief in KH comments, the #2 talk for just reading the bible so any comments and ideas on the reading are directly from the GB in the guide given to elders and MS, etc.

Same reason public talks area also prescripted.

Don't think, just listen, obey, and be blessed.

Whatever the reason, it is nice to have one less mtg! Many a JW can't hardly wait 'til they knock off the Friday from the big annual convention!

Actually, it'd be well received if the GB established a 1-day CA, a 2-day RA, and a 3-hr special meeting. Oh, one can only dream.......
