I think in light of our experience of how in medical situations the borg can screw parents to the detriment or cost of their seriously ill children, my primary concern was the child's welfare. This was not at all to judge the parents, but because we know how the cult works.

This is probably I was so surprised at the reaction of readers and their overwhelming support for the parents. They were looking at the situation as it really was and not from the view or fears we might have.

I too may have taken the same/similar action as the parents if facing a similar situation to what the father described. If I felt my child was not getting adequate health care or their health could be irreversibly impacted by a treatment that had better alternatives, then I would probably do everything in my power to get them transfered to another facility.

However, on a general note and not just for this case, I do feel there is far too much negativity towards the medical profession. I have seen a few doctors who were clearly not doing their job and they never saw me again. I usually do all my homework to make sure I'm as informed as possible, but even then, I would would only consider myself informed or reasonably informed, never an "expert". Sorry MissFit, I agree with everything else you said and really sorry for what you went through, just don't agree with the terminology "expert" :-). I don't see how hours, days or even weeks of online research can ever come close to the years of study followed by years of practice doctors have. But I fully understand where you are coming from and I never hesitate to question or even query things with my doctors. After all, we have to live with the side-effects and long-term consequences. It's better we know what they are!

Like a bird. I think you misunderstood me. I was not referring to the experts on the internet. When I said experts I really meant actual Doctors in the field that had dealt everyday with children with my son' s problem. They were in an actual hospital and really went to school and everything.

I did research on the internet to find out about the illness so I could ask intelligent questions. When I met with the " experts" or specialists in the field, I was able to understand better what my options were. My son' s doctor was a pediatrician and did not have experience working with blood disorders.

But you are right , the doctors are not the ones that have to live with the day to day and long term consequences .

Legislators and judges recall when they were that age. It is absolutely not right. I focused on the law b/c of flag salute and college. It distresses me when some judges allow teens to kill themselves b/c of the blood doctrine. I saw how I changed just living in Manhattan or going to a single course. Now I approve of the nuclear bombs over Hiroshima, etc. My father thought he had the rights of a Roman father to kill me. This is not Rome. What type of parent wants their child to die for the WTBTS? The ever evolving doctrine. They are not natural parents or even normal strangers.

This case may have unusual facts. Why was there not better security in the hospital? Maybe the civil libertarian in me wants families to make decisions and not the govt. Such parents should have all their parental rights stripped. I was ever aware as a minor that they could do anything with me.

This confuse me as well. How can the law deem a child a "minor" and recoginize they are not capable of consent, in all other matters, contracts, marriage or civil and not allowed to drink alcohol or smoke cigarrettes to protect them and not allowed to join the army because they are too young ? and then allow this same child to take his own life ? The argument for legal and State protection of children is that they do not have the brain development to make an informed decision because they are children.

This is a very rare and unusual brain tumor. The man seeks alternate and very high tech laser treatment. The Canadian government has supported such cases who sought special and unusual buy scientific treatment by legitimate hospitals in other countries.

I am in my sixties. When I was in high school, the ACLU and other groups were advancing the rights of older teens. Student newspaper editors were a huge group. I was an editor. We did a parody issue. I did not see the final version. The paper was seized by the Board of Education All students had to return their issue. Trucks came to remove the paper asap. I can see where a family court judge who routinely deals with teens might be impressed by an articulate teen. It is the flip side of the same coin. Recognize my autonomy to complete school but don't recognize my autonomy for blood. I would never allow it if I were a judge. My colleagues might demand that I recuse myself.

One option buys time for a child to become a mature adult. The other option is death. Resurrection is not part of the common law. I've changed a lot since high school. My music remains the same.
