    Makes no sense.

    A person who has been stoned to death cannot repent and return to the fold.

    I don't get it.

    They don't really want "evil" ones to return, they want to frighten everyone else not to leave.

    In their minds --- spiritual death. Akin to being stoned.

    Yes, shunning either (a) makes an example of them, to scare the others, or (b) prevents the ones still in from talking to someone who has "gone apostate". In both cases it's like the person has been killed.
