The whole idea of religion keeping people in line is incredibly archaic.The people who sing its virtues love the comfort of nursery rhymes.
Even the Soviet Union succeeded in "uniting" disparate peoples - but take the control away, and all hell breaks loose. Same with religion: It can control people's base instincts but the "changed" behaviour is more often than not, skin deep.
