The rank and file members (the phrase still rankles me. memories of J. Edgar Hoover) never gave the GB any power or legitimacy. It was taken, first by Russell, and emphatically so by Rutherford. It is no different than Shelby's assertions. What if I were to emerge as God's special envoy? I could start issuing mandates through JWN. No dissent would be allowed. The boogeyman in the sky would know if you sinned by reading any material except my own.

How did Lenin and Hitler seize power? A theocracy is not a democracy. If you read the neurobiology of mind control, I am not so certain that we are responsible for our omissions. How many born-in members had access to alternative thinking? I had no clue what to do in a church. A wax figure of the WWII pope in the church did not help matters.

Perhaps the current young generation gives the GB legitimacy. It is so easy to sneak a google search at home. Do you know what impressed me when I first found this site? First, the mention of names of dead Bethelites that my parents mentioned, and .second, that almost everyone here experienced the Witnesses in the same manner that I did. Before the Internet, you were so alone. Look at all the Meet-ups and activism.

While the R&F think they are doing the right thing...the GB knows they are doing the wrong thing, and they do it anyway.

smiddy - "Do the members of the G.B. honestly beleive they are Gods chosen people to present unchanging truth to jehovahs witnesses today?"

Well, if you'd spent your whole life achieving the highest position you can in a "theocratic" environment that had been practically engineered to filter out any inkling of dissent or contradictory thought before it reaches you, wouldn't you?

They have every incentive to "honestly believe" it, and absolutely no incentive whatsoever to disbelieve it.

Xanthippe - "The GB know that they have stolen ideas from Christendom like the ransom sacrifice of Jesus and pretented that they were given it, through holy spirit..They know that they take verses in the Bible out of context to say whatever they want. They know that they quote mine from scientists and archaologists to make science look bad and the Bible look good."

Ah, but when they do it, it's okay, 'cause they're God's chosen channel of communication.

Remember, it's not the (WT) message that's important; it's (the R&F's) obedience to it.
