    Yes, Jake!

The typical, landlubbing pendulum clocks, of course, couldn't function properly on board a sea going vessel so John Harrison developed chronometers -- unfazed by the effects upon the ships of an ever unpredictable sea. This is how the problem of determining longitude was solved.

I'm trying to remember the title of a book I read years and years ago. I want to say Boorstein wrote it. It dealt with the quest for

an accurate time-keeping mechanism from antiquity and the difficulties they encountered.

Could it have been The Discoverers?

Thanks, Terry, for clearing that up. A couple of strong cups of black coffee help the frontal neocortex too.

Coffee use to help...but now...I'm far past help. A good night's sleep is the only elixir. Those are hard to come by.

Terry, I'm glad you didn't catch your error in the SUBJECT: line until it was too late.
