This is pretty similar to what happens to JW's who actually " prove " the truth to themselves.

It's a bit like saying "prove that 2 + 2 = 5 for yourself" and only allowing the person to 'prove' it using textbooks that support the view that 2 + 2 = 5, along with some old dusty book that ambiguously suggests that different numbers can be added together to get other numbers (without indicating which numbers are literal or 'symbolic').

Well I followed that very advice and look where it led me . I tried using just their publications, I could tell straight away that the info they had on evolution was codswallop and it led me to look at what else was codswallop...

I also disproved their own doctrines using only their publications.
JWs are generally happy to follow the groupthink, but there will always be a few who see the man behind the curtain.
