Well the whole culture of Israel allowed for public discussion. The older men would go out by one of the gates to discuss matters. There was a lot of scripture, and a lot of prophecy to discuss. NO one was called down on an opinion or a quote as an apostate.
What goes on this religion is more along the lines of 1984.
