  Im sure you will agree that the jews copied the origin stories in Genesis from other cultures. The reason for the extraordinary lifetimes for the early characters it the jewish copier misunderstood the source text and took some word to mean years when it meant months or other unit of time. From that the numbers are nonsense. Im not sure how this addresses the other problems wiht the text like nonsense ages for father and mothering, but it does seem more logical. Then again the ancients also loved to give their gods extraordinary lifetimes. Many cultures even said their gods were immortal and the further back in time you go the boundary of man and god gets blurred.

  There have always been local floods simply because man needs water and almost always establishes himself next to a river or lake. Even today nearly all the great cities on earth are near to water. If you live near water there will be times when it floods. The only way to surivie such an event is of course to use a boat and gather your possessions. From that the story pretty much writes itself. The vikings used birds (cant recall which type, might have been a raven) to locate land when they ventured away from land and far out to see. They knew if the bird didnt return it meant it had found land. Pretty simple but effective.
