The original story reported by the news was that the hitchhiker tried to control the guy using the blunt end of the axe. When that didn't work he used the sharp side. They said there was a lot of blood.

Don't you reckon he's a bit "loose" himself? His comment about a mini mal and surfing Mavericks. That place has monster surf as in 70' and only highly tuned professionals would dare go out. Doesn't take away from his bravery though.
