It is not the case that guns are less controlled than porn as objects. However there is a double standard with sexuality and nudity, compared to violence. A child of 18 will have seen thousands of acts of violence on broadcast television, many of them involving guns, while almost never seeing nudity or even a female breast.
It is very likely that these people were among those who set the cultural precedent for acceptance of violence and repression of sexuality. Recall that they were ejected from Europe for religious extremism.

Because the US is a nation of religious nutters that use the bible where it clearly allows for killing another person if they are slightly different than you but where it clearly shows that sex is bad.
If every Christian would simply follow the bible, we wouldn't have any Christians (or bible) anymore.
