It recalls an very old English proverb:

"A man convinced against his will/

is of the same opinion still."

JWs seldom care enough about the literal "truth" to ensure they accurately grasp householders' questions or comments. They "listen" just enough to activate their stereotypical responses.

Given that large numbers of witnesses just want the world to leave them alone - and the elders to get off their backs - they learn how to slip out away from any direct consideration of anything controversial.
