Boring Lunches - Bento Anyone?

If you follow Skeeter, you know that Skeeter is a fan of the East.

Bento is a Japaneese lunchbox. It originated from a tale where a small lunchbox fed a family for a long time. (aka 1 loaf feeding many). The Japaneese farmer's wife lovingly packed a bento box for her husband to take with him in the fields. Today, bento boxes are made by doting mothers and between lovers as an expression of love. As they are small, portioned control meals, many lose weight if they eat "Bento" style. If you see a "Lunchable" - that's a Bento Box (but an unhealthy one).

Now, I'm into Bento. I thought I'd share some with you.

There are a million Bento boxes. Ones for every theme & interest. Holidays, cartoons, hobbies, . . . the creativity and fun is endless. It's a really cool present!

And, there are many styles of actual carriers (i.e. the actual Bento box). Masculine, feminine, children, oriental, fancy, plastic, etc.

I have many fond memories of Bento. Our mother would packed carefully prepared sushi in a Bento box for the School Picnic. It was like a Sushi party at the picnic. All other times, we usually carried rice, vegetable side dishes and dried seeweed.

I love bentos. Grew up on them, and they are always a very convenient meal to pick up when you are on the go in Japan.

I made the "Eggs in Chick" this weekend for breakfast. It didn't take long at all. Perhaps 20 seconds an egg. Everyone smiled at breakfast - even the tween!

Hard boil egg. Quarter a slice of carrot for nose. Put carrot slice in boiling egg water to cook enough to take the crunch out, but not mushy.

Peel egg. Make criss-cross slits on white, just to the egg yolk (you'll feel it with the knfe). Gently pull off upper top.

Find something for eyes. I used chocolate sprinkle. Attach carrot nose.

It sure makes eating fun. I wish my area were more multi-cultural.
