James, you may not be old enough to remerber a
amateur name, Teofilo Stevenson of Cuban. He fought
as a heavyweight from 1971-1982. He won three gold
medals in the olympic games, two in the Pan American
championship and three in the world amateur championship.
For ten years he was knocking the hell out of 18 and 19 yrs old.
He was offered 5 million to fight Ali but turn it down.

The IRS doesn't think they're amateurs. They want to collect income tax on the value of their medals and prize money. It seems that many national Olympic committees pay prize money to medal winners, including the USOC.
