In pp. 12-15 there is an auto-biography about a former Pentecostal evangelist who said she had the power to heal. I've never understood this. Are healing powers real? Why do JWs have a lot of stories about people studying and then losing their "gifts"?

Powers to heal came from Demunz!

Well, except when Jezus did it.

You know there are some pretty interesting studies being done on the power of the mind to cause or bring about self healing.

Here is just the first link I picked up on Google

    http://healing.about.com/od/visualization/a/powerofmind.htm

"Through the wormhole" with Morgan Freeman has also discussed this subject, in one of the shows.

    just something to consider??

Sorry guys I just don't know, I still believe in the supernatural because I can't explain things—a lot of things. If demons are real then there must be a God. At this point I'm not agnostic but deist. I'm young and have yet to finish reading the Bible, but it seems to be taking forever because I'm doing it slowly. I have to give it a chance and hear what it has to say. I don't expext to understand it after reading it one time. Thousands of years have passed and I don't think anyone understands it completely.

Well, they don't recommend "healing powers"....

"Soon thereafter, I used this power to heal a

child who was very sick with a high fever.

When I offered a prayer, the child immediately

began to perspire and the fever disappeared.

At last, I felt that I could fulfillmy

promise to God. Strangely, though, I felt a

void. Deep inside, I believed that there is

only one God, but I did not really know who

he is. And I had nagging doubts about many

of the doctrines of the church............................

    ..............................................................................

    I mustered up the

courage to go home to burn all the things I

had used inmy former work as a pastor. After

doing so, I realized that any special powers

previously given to me were gone. In the

past, when I slept, I felt that something was

constantly pressing down on me. That feeling

was gone too. The shadows I used to see

at the window of my room never appeared

again. My study of the Bible had taught me

that any so-called gifts today, like the power

to heal, are not from God but from wicked

spirits. I am so happy that I broke free from

their influence, just as the servant girl did

whom Paul freed from “a demon of divination"

So they don't deny the power of these things but attribute it to the demons..They would avoid it like the plague !

"Why do JWs have a lot of stories about people studying and then losing their "gifts"? "

That's easy. Rather than show these are false/fake claims, it suits the WT better to infer they really happen. Then they use it as proof there really are demons and that their religion alone has God's protection from them.
