I've wanted to read this since high school. Perhaps the title reminded me of the orange Witness book for children. I tried reading it in college and could not. My Nook experience encouraged me to donwload some free classics. I downloaded the free version and still could not read it. In the end, I paid for a heavily annotated version and I am reading.

I was wondering if anyone has any comments. It is beautifully written. I find it magnificent. It requires much concentration, though. It is not the same as reading a new novel. I wonder if anyone writes this way today.

Milton started writing "Paradise Lost" after he got married.

After his wife died he wrote "Paradise Regained".

Satan comes over as having a LOT of valid charges against the Almighty, and is more alive and colorful than the dull and dutiful God Almighty...

Geez, you know BOTR, I've always felt the same myself! That ugly, Creamsicle-colored book made quite an impression on me, too. Milton's work seems like it's pretty rich for someone with a short attention span like mine. I've started-stopped-restarted-stopped Joyce's Ulysses about 10 times in my life. I have a feeling that reading Milton's Paradise would be no different.

    'tis a noble endeavour!

    Breakfast -

Dont feel bad at not being able to get into a book with words like "thurrrullurrlurrrlmmprrthrrrlunptd!"

    HAMSTERBAIT - I believe "thurrrullurrlurrrlmmprrthrrrlunptd!" is from Joyce's Finnegan's Wake. . . . Along with "Thrakkkakkakakakak. . . etc"

Read "Letters from the Earth" by Mark Twain. Easier to read, just as satirical, the jokes are funnier, and Twain skewers the Bible with the pinpoint accuracy of a Voodoo priest taking aim at your gout.
