I saw one of the very best documentaries on Luther on PBS last night. Alas, it was a repeat. They only ran the first part with no notation when the second part would air. Young Man Luther and other books- I am so tired of hearing the early part of the story. Few works seems to focus on his formation of Lutheranism. Relationship to Calvinism and his virulent antisemitism of his later years after protecting Jews as a monk.

Missed it, darn it! Fell asleep too early. Will try to find it on the PBS app-- looked interesting.

I know little about Lutheranism but wonder if Luther himself had little to do with its formation aside from his ideas and writings which were used by others?

Luther had a major impact. He was a ruler, if I recall correctly. Sort of like Calvin in Geneva. Last night's programs said that no one can determine what he actually meant to accomplish by nailing his theses in a public matter. The scholars find it hard to believe that he just wanted to discuss the matter with a church intermediary. My understanding is that existing political forces used him for their own end.
When will the second part be broadcast?
