myelaine- Thanks for this Report. It is amazing the fear that grips peoples lives on a daily basis. Religiously institutionalized rape and molestation need to be reported to the Human Rights Courts where continual pressure can be brought to bear on these countries.

    dear designs...

pressure from where, the US government? President Obama thinks that islam is a great faith, why mess with a great faith?...the US govt. is afraid (with reason) to upset the "loose cannon" radical muslims. Is the UN going to put pressure on the afghan government?...the only ones I see doing anything constructive are the NGO's and they don't have any authority in those "halls"...do they. (imo the NGO's are some of the ones who will be showing the government leaders in those "halls" HOW to beat their swords into plowshares)...

    anyway...the question was rhetorical...matthew 21:43-44

This is where Political pressure comes in. Pressure our Federal Government through our Congress and Senate and the UN. This is a long process and like with China and other communist countries, Islamic countries cannot keep out the news of democratic freedoms and Civil Rights, people like Suu in Myanmar are evidence that decades long struggles can begin to see fruition.

We learned as JWs that standing with hands in our pockets while a DF'd person drowns is a crime. We can never go back to being persons who see human rights violations and do nothing or stay silent.

"We learned as JWs that standing with hands in our pockets while a DF'd person drowns is a crime. We can never go back to being persons who see human rights violations and do nothing or stay silent."...

no offense but, you haven't resisted this ^^^^^^ "sin" unto bloodshed(hebrews 12:3-4). will you be in the halls next sunday fighting for the rights of your fellows?...the "little guy" knows but he is afraid, designs.

I'd rather not be a woman in a Muslim country.

    dear glenster...

here is a snip of your link: "deeply rooted teachings of equality in the religion"...puhleese the religion is top down and NO ONE is equal.

...according to mohammad's first wife, women had more personal freedom and rights before islam was "born"...she was his employer AND she was "allowed" to interpret "religious things" for him when he was confused by it all!

myelaine- If you are suggesting martyrdom on my part then no I am alive, I haven't thrown myself in front of a Witness's car to prevent them from going out in Service if I'm understanding your pov.. Am I an activist for human rights, yes, I belong to several human rights groups who seek cabinet level positions and political pressure on our elected officials to address civil rights internationally. As to helping the Witnesses, yes I am active in that as well although going into their Kingdom Halls for civil discourse is not the place I choose to engage them, I believe there are better venues where their minds can be open to civil discourse.

The context of the phrase you quoted isn't a reference to Islam as generally
believed but to what is attempted by advocates of reform in Islam. Though they
have some points (there's mixed acceptance to how sura 4:34 could be translated
to include "leave her" not "beat her"),
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sura_4:34

and I appreciate that they want nicer outlooks to be accepted, they remind me
of spin doctors for a bad politician (produced by Mel Brooks?). They're trying
to work with texts that only allow so much wiggle room.

"The methodology of reform can be classified into two groups, one depending on
re-interpreting the traditional texts which constitutes Islamic law. This
varies widely from little deviation from the traditional interpretation, to the
more liberal which considers only the meaning of Qur'an as a divine inspiration,
while the wording is believed to be from the prophet Muhammad intended by him to
suit his time and situation, therefore interpreting the problematic verses in
modern times allegorically or even not considering them.

"The second is questioning the authentic status applied to texts by the Tradi-
tional Islamic Scholars, resulting in the most liberal case as of the Qur'an
Alone Muslims in rejecting the Islamic narratives of the sayings and practises
of Prophet Muhammad, namely the Hadith completely."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_movements_within_Islam

Qur'an-only leaves various problems (homophobia, etc.) with the Qur'an,
    though.

You can't completely clean up Muhammad's act regarding bigotry about women and
homosexuals, about slavery and religion as law of the land with punishments and
executions, etc., and have an uncontested solid case historically.

    You get a dichotomy--
a bigot about homosexuals, women's roles, and non-Muslims who followed tran-
scendent advice to be fair to a fault,
a man who liked to set some slaves free and guaranteed this ability was fre-
quently available by having rules about buying them that included the right of
male owners to have sex with willing female slaves (likely to relent to be set
    free or treated better),
a pacifistic leader of aggressive warfare,
an example of separation of church and state who made religion law of the land
    with punishments and executions,
a provider of proof of God, the Qur'an, to justify the punishments and execu-
tions who didn't provide it, etc.

"They need to move into the 21st century. The middle ages were over a long time ago. ..." Bangalore

Like Designs said, DARK AGES, Bangalore, DARK AGES....

Re Glenster's first post on this thread...

It's always amazed and amused me that some black Americans became Muslim while decrying the "white man's" role in establishing slavery in America - apparently they were totally unaware of the role that followers - ahem, WHITE followers of Islam - played in the slave trade....
