    Why Was Polygamy Allowed?

Jesus showed that God set the standard for marriage when He told the first human pair: “A man will leave his father and his mother and will stick to his wife, and the two will be one flesh.” (Matthew 19:5) Marriage was to be a lasting bond between two persons. However, by the time God organized the Israelites into a nation and gave them the Law, polygamy had become a common practice. Thus, though God did not originate or encourage polygamy, he provided laws to regulate it. When the Christian congregation was formed, God’s Word clearly prohibited polygamy.—1 Timothy 3:2.

Jehovah God tolerates certain things until his time to correct them. (Romans 9:22-24) Jesus showed that Jehovah had temporarily tolerated improper marriage customs as a “concession” made out of regard for Israel’s “hardheartedness.”—Matthew 19:8; Proverbs 4:18.

    George

Just an excuse to try and justify polygamy.

Thanks for posting that George. Funny how everything Paul supposedly wrote back then gets interpreted as something that God commanded. Considering that you almost can't blame the WT for saying that their word is essentially as good as God's.

Until 1947 African jw men were allowed to have more than wife.

Substitute the word IDOLATRY for POLYGAMY and see how ridiculous the WTS excuses are; how they read things into the Bible that aren't there.

I married Olabisi Fashugba in February 1941 and knew enough not to take any additional wives. But until 1947 when the missionaries came, polygamy was common in the congregations. Polygamous brothers were told that they had married more than one wife in ignorance. So if they had two or three or four or five wives, they could keep them, but they should not take any more. That was the policy we had.

Polygamy, however, was already a fixture in many tribal societies. So when the Law later given to Moses discussed polygamy, it was not introducing something new. The Law simply regulated an existing institution and prevented its abuse. This it did by regulations and restrictions, which tended to discourage plural marriages. (Exodus 21:9-11; Deuteronomy 21:15-17; 1 Samuel 21:3-5; 2 Samuel 11:11) Consequently the majority of Israelites were not polygamists. Polygamy was practiced mainly by the wealthy and the ruling class.

But what of Abraham? Until he was at least 85 years old, Abraham confined his sexual relations to his wife Sarah. But because she failed to bear children, Sarah invoked ancient custom and suggested a substitutionary arrangement. Her maid Hagar would bear him a child for her. (Genesis 16:1-11) There is no indication, though, that Abraham had further relations with Hagar after he fathered her son Ishmael

God allowed polygamy for a time, as it contributed to the fulfillment of his promise to Abraham: "I shall make a great nation out of you."

As was the case with divorce, polygamy, while not God?s original arrangement, was tolerated until the time of the Christian congregation. Polygamy had a start not long after Adam?s deflection. The first Bible mention of it is concerning a descendant of Cain, Lamech, of whom it says: "[He] proceeded to take two wives for himself." (Ge 4:19)

Those who claim that a polygamist like Solomon would not have spoken of husband-wife relationships in such a way as to imply monogamy (5:15-19; 18:22; 19:13, 14) lose sight of the fact that polygamy was not advocated but simply tolerated and regulated by the Law. And it may well be that the Jews generally practiced monogamy.

Polygamy was allowed under the Mosaic Law but was regulated so that the wife was protected.

God tolerated the practice, and under the Mosaic Law he even instituted measures to assure proper treatment of women who had such a relationship

    Jacob
became a polygamist because of deception on the part of his father-in-law.

Though it would have been said, couldn't have Jacob upheld God's standards? Why did he go on to have children by 2 concubines (see Abraham's excuse)

    *** rs p. 250 par. 4 Marriage***

As for Abraham, he took Sarai (Sarah) as his wife. When she was about 75 years of age and thought she would never bear a child, she requested her husband to have relations with her maidservant so that Sarai could have a legal child by means of her.

It is well known that Solomon had many wives as well as concubines. But not everyone is aware that, in doing so, he was violating Jehovah?s clearly stated commandment that the king "should also not multiply wives for himself, that his heart may not turn aside." (Deut. 17:17)

But that doesn't mean he couldn't have 2 or 3 wives.

*** rs p. 250 par. 3 Marriage***Jehovah is not the originator of polygamy.

It was really just a property issue, married and engaged women were considered the property of the husband/fiance. David could have chosen any single woman (or widow as in the case of Abigail) but he to have someone else's wife.

A likely translation of Paul is an elder must be husband of his "first" wife; not "one" wife. The Bible is never down on polygyny, but often forbids divorce. Monogamy is a relatively recent invention. Churches forbade polygyny to distance themselves from Judaism, then sought Bible verses to back it up. Grasping at straws, they came up with things like Jesus speaking against divorce and the certificate being because of the Jews' "hardheartedness" to support the dogma.

Jehovah told Abraham to take his wife's slave, so he didn't just "tolerate" polygyny; he supported it. There are many details in the Mosaic Law concerning polygyny. If God didn't want Jews to practice it, he'd have forbidden it, rather than instruct them how do to it. All the arbitrary rules: Blue string in the hem, fringe on the hem, etc. and nothing about "Don't marry more than one person"? Polygyny had and still has God's blessing, according to Scripture.

    The justification gets worse:

    *** w09 7/1 p. 30 Does God Approve of Polygamy? ***
To counter the attacks, Jehovah repeatedly sent his prophets to warn his people when they veered from righteous standards. However, he knew in advance that his people would often fail to obey even the most basic of commands, such as the one against idolatry. (Exodus 32:9) If they would struggle to obey so basic a law, how would they fare with a law against polygamy? With his perfect grasp of human nature, Jehovah saw that it was not yet the time to forbid that practice, which was already long-established in those days. Had he done so, Satan would have found a very easy means of seducing Israel into sin.
God’s temporary toleration of polygamy had other advantages. It helped the nation to grow rapidly. The larger population helped to ensure the nation’s survival until the time of the Messiah. Polygamy may also have provided a measure of protection for some women, giving them shelter and a household in dangerous times.

Due to their imperfection God's people cannot even keep basic laws so how could they keep the law against polygamy. Surely, bringing this up-to-date. God's people are even more imperfect so how can they keep the law against immorality, which is already long-established in these days. Jehovah still has a perfect grasp of human nature so why would he chose to forbid this practice. In doing so, Satan has a very easy means of seducing JWs into sin.

God's toleration of polygamy had other advantages. It helped the nation grow rapidly. Likewise today by tolerating immoratlity think how many more JWs there would be and around 30,000+ less disfellowshipped ones each year.

Polygamy may also have provided a measure pf protection for some women. Likewise today. Better is it that a JW woman commits immorality with a fellow JW than go off with someone in the 'world'.

The Jews stole every mythical figure from other cultures and made them one of their own. Solomon, if he even existed under that name, was an adept of the highest order, so there's no way he's a monotheist worshiping Jehovah the the Ancient Terrorist from the Pleiades. Ever wonder how Solomon could be so "wise" and then become a "pagan" worshiper at the end? Believe me, it wasn't so he could get laid more often.
