There are issues with any religion that fears the question. After all if it is "the Truth" as it purports to be then no question should be an issue since everything could be proved and supported it would be true. There would be no need to shun because no one would be dissatisfied by the answers they received.

It is only when something is a lie then they have to worry about difficult questions.

What religion encourages its members to question their tenets? i'll wait and if u do question something then what conclusion is made? are they going change their interpretation of something because John in Brooklyn questioned it and had a strong argument?

    Just a thought.....

Why not work on the transition into a fuller consciousness....

He has more or less said he knows it has a lot of holes but he is in for routine, familiarity and grounding.

Maybe start asking where he starts making distinctions in his life between what he knows is opinion and what he personally knows to be best for him...... ie encourage independent thinking and choosing actions that benefit him over a WTS conjecture.

He needs to get comfortable in being 'conscious class' and then when he is ready he will transition easier and more confidently into the realm you wish to see him progress.

Be nice if you could get him here.....tell he can just hang, post his opinions...

He seems to have the notion that religion is essentially extreme fundamentalism. The comparison to extremist Muslims and Baptists is telling, as they are two examples of fundamentalist religion. Point out that Unitarians, Catholics, Methodists, Reform Judaism, most eastern religions and many others allow for intellectual freedom within their ranks.

It's true that the Vatican won't change its rules just because some Catholic disagrees, but they won't harass and disfellowship him either. I know plenty of Catholics who can't stand the Pope and disagree with much church policy, but still go to church because the belief resonates with them.

The reality is that the Watchtower organization has an unhealthy amount of control over its members. Sure there are other examples, like Mormons and Scientology. And there are worse examples, like Islamic-Fascists. But really, do two wrongs make a right? Is this dude trying to have JWs win the "slightly less pathological religion" award?
