    Thanks for your viewpoint, Middie.

My g'ma did not like me, and never showed any interest in me otherwise.

Yes, she knew the landlord would be impressed with my reading skills, and she milked it for all it was worth.

    I've long ago forgiven her.

For some reason, I just thought of that incident, and put it out there.

She said, "You are to answer 'Yes, sir' or 'No, sir' to him. That's a WHITE man!"

Your Grandmother was brought up (same as my grandparents) at a time when they were taught to address their 'superiors' (don't read anything untoward in that) in a certain manner. My grandfather would always address anyone in a superior position as 'sir' and tip his hat.

On a positive note, think about how much joy you gave to this (probably lonely) man.

    Now, you're talking!

Looking back, I believe it was the highlight of his work week.

He came without fail each and every Wednesday until mother came home.

The routine was always the same: I would read his newspapers to him, he would laugh and tell me how smart I was, then give me a handful of silver dollars.

When I told mother about it and how g'ma kept the money for her son, my mother just shook her head sadly.

    Thanks for your responses.

    Syl
