Hi folks... long time and all...

The earthquake in Japan and the conversation that followed with my dear mother re: the imminence of Armageddon got me googling and I found this link which puts things in perspective somewhat.

You see (all) of the ancients thought it was gods that were responsible for causing earthquakes.

Really no different than the God of the ancient Israelites known as Yahweh. (Jehovah)

But earthquakes creates fear and the WTS. publishing company exploits fear to proliferate their literature. $$$

The last earthquake to hit Japan of this magnitude was in the 1700s. This kind of thing has been happening for eons now. The difference now is that a bunch more people are living there and are getting massacred by these types of mega quakes. It isn't Bible prophecy it's business as usual for the Earth and people are now getting in it's way with cataclysmic results.

Earthquakes have been occuring for millions of years, and will continue to occur. Just as earthquakes are caused today by the movement of techtonic plates - so too they were 2000 years ago.

For Jesus to specify that the end times would be marked with "earthquakes" is about as useful as him saying that in the last days "the sun will rise one day after another." Earthquakes simply occur (in fact, small earthquakes are constantly occurring hundreds of times per day around the globe) - as they always have - making this 'indicator' useless. Evidently, the bible authors did not understand the real nature of earthquakes, and likely they believed them to be acts of god and/or satan. Because the authors did not know, neither could Jesus... thus he throws out this bogus 'sign' that matches all times past and future. (As is the case with all of Jesus's 'signs')

Graph: Severity and frequency of worldwide earthquakes with 1,000 or more deaths since the year 1900 with forecast based upon trend (pdf)

Jehovah's Witnesses believe earthquakes have become more frequent and severe in recent years, and this is a sign of Armageddon approaching. Here is a graph of data collected by the US Geological Survey regarding the frequency and severity of worldwide earthquakes since 1900, with a mathematical forecast to 2050.

The only thing that's really new here are the frequency of reports. Humans are more numerous than ever before and living in more places than ever before with more monitoring tools than ever before. As stated before, earthquakes, in of themselves, are nothing new...
