Can't reconcile the JW concept of "temptation"

When told recently of someone in the congregation who had "given in to temptation", the person relating the incident said: "Satan waited until just the right moment to tempt Br. Weak."

I began thinking about the correlation between temptation, free will, and what JWs teach about wicked spirit creatures' abilities (or lack thereof).

JWs teach that wicked spirit forces CAN affect the material world-- move objects, speak in audible voice, create visions, possess living creatures (humans included); yet they also teach that they cannot read or manipulate our thoughts.

As in the case mentioned above, when someone is "seduced" into immorality, Satan is charged with having tempted that person at that moment in time. Since no wicked spirit can read (and therefore influence) a particular person's mind at a single point in time, the only JW-worthy explanation is that the non-JW who acted as the "temptress" must have been literally posessed by a wicked spirit at that point in time. It would mean the temptress had free will removed for a time and that her body was literally not under her own control-- she was literally turned into a demon surrogate during the encounter.

I've never seen anything in WTS literature that directly makes the claim that those who are tempted by Satan into immorality are being tempted by someone under demon possession-- but that's the only explanation that seems to back the claim that Satan can "strike" with this temptation at a specific weak moment in time.

(Aside: Satan tempted Jesus only through vision-- not by using anything material or with any person.)

    Thoughts?

"Satan waited until just the right moment to tempt Br. Weak." ....they also teach that they cannot read or manipulate our thoughts. .......when someone is "seduced" into immorality, Satan is charged with having tempted that person at that moment in time. Since no wicked spirit can read (and therefore influence) a particular person's mind at a single point in time.....

The explanation would be something like Satan/demons could judge that perfect moment in time by the individual's actions, not by reading their thoughts. It would be after the individual was looking at cyberporn, after they had a huge fight with their wife, after overdrinking and their guard was down and thus less inhibitions, etc etc that they were tempted and seduced into immorality by the good looking, considerate, divorced woman at work (translated: horney slutty whore).

A prime example of the cult propoganda technique of 'Mystical Manipulation'!

    Yep.

Even the most simple of JW teachings can rarely stand up to more than 30 seconds of scrutiny before collapsing into a heap of paradoxes, self-contradictions, and utter nonsense.

Of course, most JWs' train of thought is derailed in 10 seconds or less, so it's not really a problem for them. "Critical thinking" is viewed with suspicion at best, more likely as an "apostate" tendency.

Mystical Manipulation - The group attributes supernatural influences where none are present--attributing an accident to a member that left to be "God's punishment"--or manipulates situations so they appear spontaneous--members believing that their new feelings and behavior has arisen spontaneously because of joining their new group. The effect is enhanced by the milieu control because dissenting or alternative ideas are not present.

    Yup! Satan did it!

punkofnice, could you post a link to where you got that quote from? I like to keep a bunch of bookmarks/favorites on the topic and I don't think I have that one.

    Thanks!

DesirousOfChange, I agree with the explanation you propose they'd put forth. It explains how the "tempted" might recognized by demons as suddenly vulnerable to temptation, but it doesn't explain what is physically causing the "tempter" to suddenly choose that moment to strike. The WTS is attributes the temptation to wicked spirit manipulation...but they never explain how that manipulation of the tempter takes place (again, without making the drastic claim that it's demonic possession).

Many temptations are caused by the persons own human heart.

No medical science (or any other religion) knows this - but, the human heart is like a second brain.

The head brain is (for a decent witness) about half good and half bad - but it can reason on things if the witness reads the watchtower constantly.

The human heart, however, is always there to give second opinions to the human brain - and these opinions are ALWAYS bad.
