Why do the JWs have such an aversion to philosophy?

I think most JWs would be surprised to find that the teachings of Jesus are included in basic college Philosophy discussions.

Brotherdan, "You can lead a JW to truth, but you can't make him think," belongs on a coffee mug.

Again WT hypocrisy rears its ugly head. JWs are taught to avoid philosophy because it comes from men, is empty, and asks one to question their beliefs (why would you question The Truth?). Yet if you are not a JW, you are asked to consider converting to a religion that comes from men, is empty, and asks non-JWs to question their beliefs (because, of course, you don't have The Truth, we do!).

Because they have been taught from their young age that to the making of many books there is no end, and much devotion to them is wearisome to the flesh.

    Philophers persuade through reasoned arguments.

Jehovah's Witnesses are an Authoritarian organization.

A Philosopher asks the question: "What do we know and how do we know it?"

A Jehovah's Witness accepts the pronouncements of the Governing Body without asking bothersome questions.

Philosophers can't come up with any "should" or "ought" based on morality.

JW's thrive on being told what is right and wrong and are constantly judged for their actions.

Understanding and accepting basic philosophy means that when it comes to truth, you realize that ideas are not the same as verifiable fact. You no longer try to bend reality to fit the ideas and thoughts you have in your mind. Instead, your ideas give way to what can be imperically proven, and without contradicting the natural laws we know exist, i.e., the existence of an invisible god.

The 11/22/72 Awake! says of philosophy, "Knowledge was sought mainly to rid oneself of religious fears and superstitions. The two primary fears to be eliminated were fear of the gods and of death."

While the WTBTS wants you to reject all other forms of religion as false worship, they still desire you to believe in their version of a diety, peddle their publications at every opportunity, and spend your life in utter servitude to the publishing cult. Philosophy very effectively eliminates any possibility of God's existence through sound reasoning, and this is obviously a threat to the existence of the WTBTS.
