Voices: "lol i need a female decorator/gay friend! (sorry...but sometimes gay men are perfect for the job...not saying ALL gay men are like that)"

I found a lace tablecloth for my own Bohemian table at the thrift store. The problem was, my gay friend/decorator and I fought for it. He draped the lace table cloth around himself and sash-ayed through the store prissing down the aisles and saying how much better the tablecloth would look on him than on my table.

Then he went to the full length mirror and re-arranged his drape several times while contemplating whether to use bugle beads or spangles on it.

Needless to say...he won. And was stunning in his DIY Haute Couture.

i think craigslist must be your version of our freeads or freecycle,

i'd say go shabby chic, pick up any proper wood stuff you can renovate yourself with a lick of paint, nothing has to come in sets cos you can mix match and posh it up for next to nothing.

If you lived in/near Chicago area, I'd have a great sofa to sell you.

I was told Ashley Furniture sells great quality items at an inexpensive price. You could also look on Craigslist, but be careful of the scammers. Do in-person transactions only! Have you ever been to World Market? Great stuff at a low cost.

I think the best places to buy plants are grocery stores and garden stores. Just don't leave the plants in the cheap plastic containers. Either replant them (buy a bag of soil) with some small rocks at the bottom if pot does not have drainage, or make sure the plastic containers can be hidden in new pots. Whatever you do, be sure to remove the plastic flim wrap that many plants come in.

the only limit will be your imagination,

when you see a bit of second hand furniture you have to look past what it is and imagine what it could be.

dead comfy sofa but yukky pattern.....throws were designed for these

not so attractive but clean lines table....get the paint out

yukky flooring, chuck out nasty carpet put down interlocking floorboards (quite often works out cheaper than fitted carpet.

bad lighting...plain mirrors to send the light round and make the place seem bigger.

nice big pot plant display in corner, light in the base behind the leaves(not hot or you'll have a fire or dead plant)...light feature

for no money, try www.freecycle.org. If you live near a well-to-do location, be sure to subscribe to that area, too.

For decorating ideas, I cannot help. When I moved a few years ago, my best decorating effort was selecting a beautiful view. And that has become my 'primary theme'.

Oh! To impress people, nothing impresses more than C-L-E-A-N. Pay special attention to the bathroom and kitchen. Especially the bathroom, where people are alone and undistracted.

the only thing i'd say dont scrimp on is your mattress if youre having a normal bed, you can refab a bed base and that will give you more funds for the important bit.

second hand pay fors can get you a bargain too.

i picked up a waterbed for about £100 second hand it was fugly n dirty. the mattress was rubber and washable, the zipped mattress sheet was boilable an came up like brand new. i ditched the old edging and had suedette sewn on instead and that cost me about a tenner, if i wanted to buy the equivalent of how it is now it would cost me at least £1500+ i checked the prices of a new waterbag and that will cost me under £100 if i ever want to replace it. and i didnt want to keep throwin money out on conditioner so i bought a big container of pool conditioner for £30 quid, will last for years.

my sofas are dark brown italian leather 3 and 2 seater comfy monsters, i got those from a charity furniture shop for £50 the pair. theyre far superior to the ones my better off friends have spent a fortune on and had to replace cos the bums have dropped through their sofa seats or their dogs/cats have clawed to bits, they double up as beds if i need space for extra bodies.
