a nice size 4.5 uk or 5.5 usa will do nicely, can get a minimum 2 years wear out of them (though 3-4 is more than possible) and they survive being thrown in the washing machine.

My son had high top canvas tennis shoes called the Odd Couple. One was red and the other blue. He loved them so much, when he grew into the next size, we bought him another pair. I should look to see if I have a scanned pic of him wearing them.
