Any good Russell or Rutherford biographies you could recommend?

I've read a few of the more popular books referenced on this forum. I've read CoC and Apocalypse Delayed, among others. I'm currently reading In Search of Christian Freedom. Despite reading these books and hundreds of threads on JWD, I still don't feel like I have a great feel for early JW history. I talk to an inactive friend who often asks me questions about early church history I have trouble answering.

I'm looking to read good biographies on Russell and Rutherford. Can anyone recommend good reads along those lines? Thanks.

Although Apocalypse Delayed probably comes the closest, I've never read anything really comprehensive myself. To what you've already read, I would recommend:

Visions of Glory - A History and a Memory of Jehovah's Witnesses - Barbara Grizzuti Harrison

A People For His Name - Timothy White

Thanks. I'll put these on my to-read list.

Have you read The Four President's of the Watchtower Society? The title seems to suggest it's the type of book I'm looking for, but not sure whether it's worth the time.

I haven't found much in the way of Rutherford, but here's some resources I've seen for Russell so far:

Faith on the March. Good reference for active JWs since they are unlikely to object to it, especially since it was written by a zealous JW and was endorsed multiple times in the 1957 Watchtowers.

Charles Taze Russel: His Life and Times. The Man, the Millenium, and the Message. Haven't read it but seems to get good reviews.

Dec 15, 1916 Watchtower. After Russell's death, this Watchtower featured Rusell's biography, will, and speeches from his funeral

Wasn't Athanasius working on one about Rutherford? I would love to read it.

Great book as I recall. Lots of early history with references.

I think there is a little information about Judge Rutherford in 'Thirty Years a Watchtower Slave" by Schnell.

There is no book length biography about Rutherford.

I have the impression that the people who knew Judge Rutherford didn't want to talk about him, let alone write about him!

Barbara Anderson wrote an interesting history on Mariah Russell that gives some insight into Chuckie's personality. It's found at .
