I am not so sure - Obama has not been polling very well lately.

Polls can change in a day, and there are two and a half more years till 2012 elections, so I'd say that's irrelevant.

Would any of you vote for someone who advocates the fair tax (www.fairtax.org) and who wants to put congress on a budget?

You missed him last election he was running?

    What is the FairTax plan?

The FairTax plan is a comprehensive proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll based taxes with an integrated approach including a progressive national retail sales tax, a prebate to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue neutrality, and, through companion legislation, the repeal of the 16th Amendment.

The FairTax Act (HR 25, S 296) is nonpartisan legislation. It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes and replaces them with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax administered primarily by existing state sales tax authorities.

The FairTax taxes us only on what we choose to spend on new goods or services, not on what we earn. The FairTax is a fair, efficient, transparent, and intelligent solution to the frustration and inequity of our current tax system.

    The FairTax:

    • Enables workers to keep their entire paychecks
    • Enables retirees to keep their entire pensions
    • Refunds in advance the tax on purchases of basic necessities
    • Allows American products to compete fairly
    • Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
    • Ensures Social Security and Medicare funding
    • Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
    • Abolishes the IRS

Ron Paul? Viability is the key here, and Ron Paul is about as viable as Sarah Palin.

And about the Fairtax... in general, I think it's a good idea, but given the latest chunk of generous tax credits most people would find their effective tax rate go up (to the Fairtax's 23%) rather than go down, and I think that will kill it.

Well, I'm on the wrong side of the ocean to have a vote and am not as well up on US politics as I'd like to be.

I guess the biggest problem the US will face will be that the dire state of the US economy will be revealed by the time the next election comes round.

I'd like to put forward Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey as a candidate. He seems to be an economic realist and he's not in politics to be popular. I find him refreshingly straightforward.

I realise of course that his presidency is never going to happen of course. Now, I know I'm going to get shot down for suggesting him but I'd be interested to see how people view him.

Someone intelligent who, among other qualities, will think twice before starting a war, if he ever has to, God forbid. Obama seems to be the right one for the job,

and the current First Lady is terrific.

Damn, where's the edit button? I've not posted on here for a while.

Just to add that Obama seems to have massive charisma. eloquence and style, but little substance and that Palin has moose meat for brains. I generally distrust Republicans anyway.

Only on what you spend, not on what you make.

We need to find some one who can actually DO the job, rather than talking about doing stuff. This will probably involve drafting somebody who has better things to do and does not wish to be President of the United States. I think Ike was the last person that fit this description.
