Just wondering how many people on this board would consider themselves a Socialist or Communist?

There are quite a few who espouse these values, but I doubt that any will actually admit that they are...could be wrong.

This board is populated by a majority of liberalism, that is just the way it is.

No big deal for me, I post once in a while on their threads but drop out when it turns personal (as it usually does).

For me, the reason to be here is to see new exJWs come on line, hear the latest nonsense from the Governing Body, and keep associated with some of the people who have left the borg and found a real life.

And, for what it is worth, it (the political histrionics) was actually worse in times past (i.e. when Bush was president)...

Snowbird did this topic a while back.

I would say that I would be a Socialist/Communist - in the sense of believing in their ideals. (giving according to ability/ receiving according to need) Whether those ideals can be implemented without corruption and greed is another matter. Communism hasn't been able to do so. Socialism, while some take advantage of it, seems the better of the two for being implemented.

The theories are varied and not set in stone, thus it may be that some people believe in some policies but not in others therefore, they may not label themselves as either because they are not. sammieswife.

"I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate (the) grave evils (of capitalism), namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals. In such an economy, the means of production are owned by society itself and are utilized in a planned fashion. A planned economy, which adjusts production to the needs of the community, would distribute the work to be done among all those able to work and would guarantee a livelihood to every man, woman, and child. The education of the individual, in addition to promoting his own innate abilities, would attempt to develop in him a sense of responsibility for his fellow-men in place of the glorification of power and success in our present society."

I lived with an American Communist in a post-Communist country for 6 months – and survived.

One day I’ll write a book about it.

We're all socialists to some degree ("keep your hands off my MediCare! and my Social Security!"), but in the modern world there are two very divergent forms of socialism-

    • one practiced in authoritarian, communist-ruled societies, mostly in Eastern Europe and Asia
    • one practiced in democratic, pluralistic societies, mostly Western Europe

Since pure communism or pure capitalism has never existed except as ideals, it is a matter of deciding how much, and which type of socialism one favors.

The closer socialism trends toward pure communism, the more likely it is to fail. Conversely, the more socialism trends toward pure capitalism, the more likely it is to fail. In the US we are struggling to correct course and find the right balance. Part of the argument is the definition of "fail" in the above context. In the US we are struggling to correct course and find the right balance. Personally, I think we've been trending toward some form of oligarchy or corporatocracy which is destroying the middle class. That makes it a 'fail' in my book.

Because of the 'FORWARD' slogan being used by the president's re-election campaign the 'Socialist' moniker is being hurled again. Interesting that Horace Greeley, the abolitionist editor, was branded a Socialist in Pre-Civil War America. My wife, the former SDS communist laughed, chuckling how MOR Obama really is.

Socialism has moderated, just like democracy has moderated.

There never was such a thing as 'democracy' in the purest form. People strive for it but it'll never happen.

When people wanted socialism and wanted it in its purest form, look what happened. Horrors! D: Reading up on the dark years of the Soviet Union is a real eye opener.

Cuba is changing as are many others. They have to - they have no choice. ;)

I am not a socialist but I'm in the middle. Government needs to control some things.
