Earnest shared this: Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy "... it is necessary to affirm that only the autographic text of the original documents was inspired.."

Yes, but AUTOGRAPHIC TEXTS DO NOT EXIST. This is like making the affirmation "...it is necessary to affirm that Peter Pan could fly."

"The verdict of this science, however, is that the Hebrew and Greek text appear to be amazingly well preserved..."

Preserving counterfeit money amazingly well doesn't make it legal currency.

Indeed, in view of the frequent repetition in Scripture of the main matters with which it deals and also of the Holy Spirit's constant witness to and through the Word, no serious translation of Holy Scripture will so destroy its meaning as to render it unable to make its reader "wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus"

The frequent reports of Bigfoot and the sincerety of those who witnessed Bigfoot's hulking presence as well as UFO kidnappings and Elvis sightings must mean the number of crackpots sayig something is what tests the veracity of their claims.

"Scripture is inerrant, not in the sense of being absolutely precise by modern standards, but in the sense of making good its claims and achieving that measure of focused truth at which its authors aimed."

A bald assertion pulled out of somebody's rectum as a boiler plate bromide. It boils down to: "We want it to be true; so it is!"

Now matter how many ways the Fundamentalists and Evangelicals try to say it, the fact remains there ARE NO ORIGINAL TEXTS available, no first generation copies and no way to avoid the years of silence between the purported events and the appearance of written versions of those events. There is no way to test any scripture for supposed "inspiration". Oral stories and lists of sayings were woven into a biography and that was all there was to it.

    Earnest shared this further:

While your account is very interesting I do not think the NWT had such an earth-shattering effect on Bible translation except in the eyes of Jehovah's Witnesses. Since Jerome produced the Vulgate there have always been upheavals when the words of tried and trusted translations are changed to better reflect the meaning of the originals.

I sound like a broken record when I repeat this fact: there ARE NO ORIGNALS! This idea is a fraud! You can't reflect the meaning of something that DOES NOT EXIST. Sorry to be shouting. This is an exceedingly important fact.

Further, if you track the number of translations which proliferated after the NWT began stirring up debate it is hard to doubt a competition had been born between an uppity cult and mainstream Christian theology.

GL Tirebiter shared: Only the NT was translated by the Watchtower in the 1950s.

Franz was pushing the "Restore Jehovah's name" nonsense by creating a translation that supposedly undid the damage originally done by translators who hid the true name of the deity.

In effect, the Watchtower was opening a gigantic can of worms by challenging the integrity of the existing Bible!

Once you publicly own up to FLAWS, TAMPERING and BIAS in the Bible itself you undermine YOUR OWN authority.

It spiralled out of control shortly after the release of the NWT.

    Terry,

Of course the Bible has problems and the words used in it have multiple and often variable meanings some even based upon superstition. This alone is a problem. To say nothing about copy errors, additions, or deletions and even the selection that determined which books should be included in it. We do not even know what the expression inspired of God means really. Is it the spelling of words, the selection of words or is it the end result, the message being taught by them? We all should know that and not be upset by your message. After all the complexity with which it was written was enough to protect it from such deterioration over time. And the things we should know can still be extracted from it regardless. The way it was written would in time separate the men from the boys and those intent on corrupting its message. It is an amazing document even with all its flaws that manges to get its message across regardless of which translation we use.

    Our dear brother Joseph offered:

I'd be interested to hear what your opinion is as to what these things are, Joseph.
