A newspaper story today mentions an Irish Catholic Church coverup and then explains that Jehovah's Witnesses have done their own cover ups of molestation, too. I guess this comment must be the typical reaction of, I assume, a loyal JW--- blame the victims!- http://www.hvpress.net/news/155/ARTICLE/8576/2010-01-13.html

"What a shallow piece of journalism. I understand the outrage of those who genuinely experience molestation but your off hand story does not even suggest that some victims have not been prepared to go to the police and press charges. Often cases go 'hidden' by the victims themselves because they have not gone to police in a timely manner, evidence trail goes cold and then they expect prosecution years later. How can laymen be expected to interview, judge and prosecute those involved when even the police must be careful not contaminate evidence or taint statements that will be tendered to courts. JW victims are always told to go to the police and if they choose not to, why should molestation become a tool of the disgruntled, slandering possibly innocent people because no proper police investigation takes place. THAT is the stuff of inquisitions.
    You should be more careful.

Sorry, but the comment quoted there contains a flat out lie - "JW victims are always told to go to the authorities/police".

Anybody who has ever seen one of these cases play out in WTland knows how far from reality this is.

JW victims are always told to go to the police

That would be funny if it weren't so tragic.

A simple Google search of JW molesatation court cases will show that the victim and their family was not encouraged to report the crimes to the police- that is why these cases were delayed in getting prosecuted! Obviously, when an elder was found out to be the perpetrator they didn't want the police getting involved.

I posted a reply. It says that they don't show up immediately.

I think more of us here should post something.

Partial truth on the comment, no?

That all depends what the law of the land is.

If the authorities demand, then the JW's encourage the victim to go.

But, if they don't require it, the JW's encourage the victim to keep quiet.
